In the film “Showing Up” one of the main characters is an injured pigeon. It ends up being a comfort to a sad and disconnected Michelle Williams, who initially hates the bird. Reichhardt, directing, does not inflate this relationship. She allows the bird to be a soft glow in Willams’ brooding routine. A soft glow—not a blast of sunlight or a raging fire. But it is such a moving glow for me—a simple, small and meaningful connection.
